Charcoal is a material that touches me deeply. It symbolises simplicity, humility as well as strength and power.
Charcoal stems from the carbonisation of several tree species, including willow and European spindle.
It is its humble, discreet, silent presence in our environment that gives this material all its nobility.
I use very fine charcoal sticks made of willow wood which give an unequalled intensity and richness in the dark tones. The qualities of this extremely fine charcoal enable a wide range of gradations, shades that range from an intense and absolute black to the evanescent transparency of white.
The creative process takes place in hand-to-hand combat. The confrontation with the material passes through my hands on a rigid support, and It is the Encounter.
I work mainly on large format 1m40/1m15; the large format gives me the comfort of experiencing this inner vastness we might call inspiration.
